When the family grows, our lives and our living space change.
If possible, we can convert a smaller (or larger) room into a children’s room. This may not seem like a big task at first, but in my opinion, it requires thorough planning and sufficient time. Your dedication will only yield a functional result.
Strong foundations
Once we have decided on the children’s room, it is worth assessing how modern it is. Buying and assembling a children’s bed in an hour is not a big task. It can wait.
Instead, let’s decide how much we can afford to spend on renovations. If we want to do a lot of work, we should give ourselves enough time to prepare a budget and avoid leaving it to the last minute, as many things can get in the way during the upgrade.
If the floor needs replacing, it is worth doing the painting first, since you can then cover the old surface.
However, climbing ladders, dropping things, waiting for walls to dry, and spilling liquids could damage our brand-new floor.
If a window or external door needs to be replaced, for example because it is draughty or we do not want to spend money on wooden windows or doors in the future, its replacement will involve dust, dirt and several work steps.
This includes plaster repair, plasterboarding, gluing XPS insulation, using plastering mesh, 2-3 coat of plastering, corner bead installation and painting. These processes require water and time must be allowed for drying.
However, if we decide to replace the wooden windows and doors, this will also be time-consuming (I recommend a solvent-based material, which has a lingering smell, or a water-based material). Sanding creates fine dust and, in many cases, the result will be attractive but not brand new. If the room has already been painted, the part with the repaired window will need to be repainted, which is often visible.
Also, let’s take into account that the additional walls can be repainted, but this is not necessary.
If an electrical installation is required due to the age of the electrical network, or if additional switches and connectors are desired, wall chasing (cut a narrow channel into brick, stone, or concrete.) will also be necessary. This is dusty, noisy work involving a lot of rubbish, so it is worth planning well and thoughtfully, or redesigning.
After the wall has been chased, it is repaired with plaster or stucco plaster, followed by further work. In such cases, a mesh can be placed on the repaired part of the wall or the entire wall can be covered with mesh.
Although it is more expensive, it provides a more long-lasting result.
In most cases, wires are routed through the ceiling and hidden by a plasterboard false ceiling. Plasterboard can also have a noise-blocking function when installed in a double layer with insulation. Alternatively, hidden lighting can be added to enhance the design and functionality of everyday spaces.
Tight budget.
I understand that not everyone can afford expensive renovations because money is needed for other areas of life too.Perhaps you’re renting your current home and don’t want to spend too much on it. In this case, painting the room white or a different colour, or wallpapering, can also make a big difference. However, it is important to check for cracks, water-damage, flaking or mould before choosing branded paints or wallpapers. The ceiling is usually white or pastel, and even if we don’t wallpaper, there are wall stickers that the owner can apply themselves. I have two children and would advise looking for at least Dulux EasyCare quality paint, which is easier to keep clean than cheaper alternatives.
It’s not the end of the world if our children touch the walls with paint-covered hands or create abstract art on them with pencils and crayons. However, if we then scrub the surface with a sponge, our recently painted walls may look worn. Alternatively, if we have paint left over and try to touch up these areas, the colour of the repairs may differ from the existing paint. That’s why you shouldn’t buy cheap paint, because you might end up paying twice.
